Shopping on a budget is pretty much everyone's cup of tea at the moment due to the cost of living crisis. Nowadays, the average food bill on a weekly shop costs around £70-£94 for just two people.
Meanwhile, a basic shop is still around £60-£70, while a more comprehensive shop, including non-food items, could reach £90-£100 or more. Now you can understand why one man was on the hunt for a cheap experience and decided to see if £1 could really bag him an entire meal at Waitrose. In a TikTok post, the account @costoflivingcrisistips, which boasts 414,000 followers, shared a clip of the recent shopping experience.
The man in the clip can be heard saying: "Waitrose £1 meal challenge, can it be done?"

He revealed how the chain has a basic range although you can't get a lot for a quid.
But Waitrose does allow you to buy fruit and vegetables individually so that can cut down on costs.
The shopper continued: "I got an onion for 12p, five baby potatoes for 39p, two carrots for 21p and a banana for 18p. I had 10p left so got another potato for 9p and of course, got my free coffee.
"So when I got home, I washed my vegetables and cut them into little cubes. I boiled them in the pan for about 7 minutes, then I diced up the onion and chopped carrots thinly.
"Then I fried the onion in the pan for about 5 minutes, added the carrots and fried them for 5 minutes too. Then I drained the potatoes and added them to the pan and cooked for about medium heat for 15 minutes."
He kept stirring the dish until it was cooked and the potato turned brown, then he served up his carrot, potato and onion hash.
"And even though I couldn't buy any meat, it's still a nice tasting meal and even got a banana for dessert, so two-course meal really," he joked.
"Total cost 99p with a penny left, bargain!"
Since the video was shared, it scooped 1,500 likes and dozens of comments. One said: "This is a Dutch dish! It's called Hutspot." Another added: "This is a masterpiece."
While other people claimed he could have made the most out of his meal in another way. Someone wrote: "Buy some chicken lentil soup and add the vegetable." A second added: "Come on man, that's not a meal."
Then a third posted: "I'm sure you could have done a jacket potato and beans for less."
